Our Story

OUR STORY

Like many self-funded start ups, our journey has been sometimes challenging. However, our story and our incredible growth to date is testament to the dedication and ambition of a team fully committed to delivering more than the normal agency/supplier relationship.

With a combined 50 years of client and agency experience, Genoa Black was set up by Claire and Alan Kinloch in 2013. They both wanted to confront the ‘agency-norm’ by creating very close partnerships with clients, that challenged the perception that agencies were expensive, at arms reach and only focused on the “fluffy stuff”. Their antidote to agency ethos was complimented by a joint personal commitment to offer ambitious individuals the chance to excel, whilst building a legacy that will last beyond the initial founders.

The moment that inspired our name. During an evening’s sail on the Firth of Forth, Alan relied on an old Genoa sail to get him back to port. A Genoa sail helps you get through a prevailing wind. A fitting description for what we do for clients.

1ST AUGUST 2013

Genoa Black starts with a laptop, a LinkedIn network and Alan’s father’s photography; his distinctive black and white photos are reflective of a company that keeps its advice simple and effective.

SEPTEMBER 2013

G&Ts to celebrate our first client payment.

DECEMBER 2013

Year one team Christmas party – M&S sandwiches.

FEBRUARY 2014

Opened our first office in Aberdeen.

AUGUST 2014

Appointed by The Edrington Group for a global project.

MARCH 2015

Opened our second office, in Leith, Edinburgh.

AUGUST 2015

Second year accounts showed 186% growth in turnover.

DECEMBER 2015

Year two team Christmas party – Aviemore.

JANUARY 2016

Appointed lead supplier on the National Digital Engagement Programme.

MARCH 2016

Awarded Professional Advisor of the Year at HSBC Export Awards.

APRIL 2016

Accredited by the Recommended Agency Register across 9 categories.

MAY 2016

Appointed lead supplier on Scottish Enterprise’s Marketing Expert Support Framework.

JULY 2016

Relocated Edinburgh office to South Queensferry.

SEPTEMBER 2016

Launched the Shipmates Graduate Programme.

DECEMBER 2016

Year three team Christmas party – Amsterdam.

JANUARY 2017

Partnered to launch the Sales and Marketing Academy Scotland.

FEBRUARY 2017

Appointed by SDI to lead the International Growth Selling Programme.

MAY 2017

Accreditation retained from the Recommended Agency Register across 9 categories.

JUNE 2017

Opened an office at Scotland House, London.

DECEMBER 2017

Year four team Christmas party – Prague.

JANUARY 2018

Our new little re-brand evolution.

FEBRUARY 2018

Recommended Agency Register accreditation in a company record 18 categories, after receiving an incredible average of 9/10 across 203 independent client ratings.

 

In its first four years, Genoa Black’s average year on year growth has been 63%, built by a team deliberately chosen from a range of marketing, business, legal,  industry and client backgrounds.

We are hugely ambitious about our future. We continue to encourage, harness and develop our know-how in order to progress, promote open, cutting-edge thinking and to allow us to deliver the best advice. We are continually learning with each new instruction, in order to be better able to understand and make a real difference to our clients.

Whilst we acknowledge that we are only human, we have an unwavering focus on growth for our clients, Genoa Black and its people, and aim always to be brilliant and better than we were yesterday. Alongside this commitment, our antidote to agency approach means we build invested and meaningful relationships with everyone we work with.
